Wow! What an amazing place. I have visited Lyme Regis many times, and until a friend told us about the Ammonite pavement I had no idea it existed. It is incredible with ammonites on the beach everywhere you look and then once you scramble across the rocks you get to the pavement. It is a protected site so you cannot take a hammer or chisel to any of the ammonites.
Wasn't quite what I expected. For some reason, I expected the beach to be full of fossils and easy to find.
Firstly, make sure you check the tide times. If it's in, you'll struggle to get around the beach and find any.
Wear food footwear it's very stoney.
When you get there, walk as far as you can onto the beach and have a look. We found 3 to take home after around 3 hours but saw lots in rocks.
If you can take a little hammer, then it's more fun.
My 5-year-old loved searching and got very excited.
Some lovely little fossils I found at the beach! A 5 minute walk down the stairs, I recommend double checking tides before you go, as well as going further along the beach to avoid the crowds. You don't need to bring a hammer or chisel, but can simply walk along the shore line.
Love this part of the country, holidaying in Dorset. Took the opportunity to visit Lyme Regis. There are a couple of beach areas to check out. Just down from the car park ( a lot of steps) nice bit of beach which was great for beach glass, did not do any fossil hunting. A 15 minute walk from this section you can find the Ammonite path. Some impressive fossils can be seen in the huge rocks.
Lyme Regis is a lovely place to visit.
Nice rocky coast line with clean water and few attractions to see.
Lots of fossils, life see creatures, seagulls.
For families with kids I recommend going to locka Aquarium where you can hold starfish, feed fish and buy souvenirs.
If you are I to fossils then this is the place to go. We parked about a 10 Min walk away, at the top of the hill, there is parking closer but it is busy. There are public toilets near the beach which were in very good condition, lots of places for a drink or ice cream. The fossils are huge, we walked for about half a mile or so just looking at them and trying to find a small one to take home . Great day out
I thought it would be easier to find fossils on this beach, considering it's promoted as such. To find anything of value, you have to pain stakingly crack open rocks for hours! The main fossils you see in pictures are on huge rocks that stay on the beach, yet when you visit, you want to find your own to take home. We took away a few small rocks that have slight signs of fossils, but nothing astonishing. It feels like all the rocks have been pilfered and in-tact fossils taken already, and all that is left is cracked stones with remnants of broken fossils. We left quite disappointed 😞
Although we saw evidence of there being fossils we didn't have the time, patience or equipment to discover anything much in the small area we could access. Meant to be better when the tide is out and you could see the enthusiasts had been chipping away for some time to look for things inside the rocks.
